I was also very bothered by the "mental episode" language. Defaming someone whose job is to run Arlington is really low (even if this statement might not be a legally chargeable crime). I wondered if -- 20 years ago -- the press would highlight that the Trump campaign was punching down? What you say here also speaks to what Jonathan is getting at -- deterioration in the CULTURE of democracy. The (to go all Tocqueville) mores that sustain the formal procedures.
